July MMIX- Life After Comic Con '09

  • Reading: A ton of Graphic Novels
I'm beat. It was an unfortunate idea to go to a concert a few hours before the trip, which is eight hours long. It always takes about a week to recover from shows, and for some reason that fact didn't occur to me. Also, my trusty Cannon Power Shot camera was knocked out of my hand across the room, breaking it. I got some good photos of the bands and crowd, but missed out on so many photo opportunities at Comic Con.

Wow, what a trip. I printed out almost 300 copies of my comics and passed them out to a ton of people. I even gave some copies to Jhonen Vasquez, Jenny Goldberg, Chuck BB, and Jim Mahfood. I got a ton of free stuff, met some great, inspiring people, and talked shop with some of my heroes.

But no photos! How can I prove that any of this happen??

In case you haven't heard, Black Metal has unwittingly infiltrated the consciousness of the mainstream. Despite it's defiance and malice towards the general population and herd mentality, it's become a powerful subculture that has spawned murder, suicides, church burnings and rampant satanic activity. It doesn't shy away from it, it glorifies, promotes and encourages.

Here's the Synopsis from the website:
In 1991, Norwegian churches started to burn, just after an underground scene of anticonsumerist metal musicians had begun to gel. While reporters and police scrambled for answers, more and more churches went up in flames. They had no leads until Varg Vikernes, one of the architects of an underground music-art-political scene known as "black metal" took credit. He was held for questioning long enough for the media to run with a largely fabricated story of satanic rituals, abductions and sacrifices. Soon, other young men took those media cues, creating an escalating cycle of fiction-fueled reality. This feature documentary unearths the real story of black metal, a movement and music genre led by metal musicians, murderers, church burners and suicide victims. The film examines the birth and explosive arc of black metal from the perspective of the musicians, young men who tried to change the world using music and symbolic acts of violence. Part modern-art splinter group, part terrorist movement and part rock scene, this underground assemblage has become increasingly commercially successful and infamous, its music available in record stores, profiled in Spin and Rolling Stone and even serving as the inspiration for popular animated shows in the US.

Huh, just the other day I wondered what ever became of you.

The joke in class was that you were haplessly smashed between the treads of a Ford F150. I don't remember how or where this bit of gory humor came from but it made us laugh.

Thanks for the comment and laughs!
